How to Set Up Your iCloud Mailbox on Mac

Cloud services are very popular nowadays not without a reason. Once you start using them, you won’t want to get back to other services. Everyone who uses Apple devices know that it’s extremely convenient to have full access to all the files from any device - both desktop and mobile. Storing files online is now secure and effective. Apple gives 5 Gb of storage to everyone who has registered in iCloud.

If you haven’t done this yet, or if you are not sure that you can access your iCloud on a Mac, do the following:

  1. Go to iCloud in ‘System Preferences’.
  2. Sign in to iCloud using your Apple ID and the personal password.
  3. Check files and items you want to share across all your Apple devices connected to iCloud.

Thus, documents created on one device will be available from any other, where you are logged into your iCloud. You can sync your calendar, contacts, photos, text files, spreadsheets, and other things.

Another thing to keep in mind is that having an Apple ID implies having an iCloud email by default.

How to Set Up iCloud mailbox on Mac

Since this feature is built into all Apple devices, you don’t need to install additional applications, and can start setting up your mail right away:

  1. Visit ‘iCloud’ in ‘System Preferences’, which can be found in the Apple menu.
  2. Sign in (or sign up, if that’s your first visit) with your ID and password.
  3. Enter the ‘iCloud’ panel.
  4. Check all the boxes next to Contacts, Calendars, Mail, Notes, Reminders, Safari.

Note, there are different options of how you can set up your mailbox on Mac (OS X 10.7.5 and earlier).
Go to iCloud in ‘System Preferences’ and follow this short manual:

In some cases, users may want to change their iCloud email address. Still, if you change it, your Apple ID will change too. This means that your login data for iTunes, Contacts, FaceTime, AppStore will be changed as well.
Optionally, you can create an alternative Apple ID and have a second email account, but I don’t recommend this to you, as there might be various unexpected problems.

Well, if you have firmly decided to change your Apple ID, here is the process. I’d also like to mention that you’ll have to log out from your old Apple ID on all your devices and log into the new one.

  1. Visit ‘System Preferences’ and select iCloud.
  2. Sign out from your current Apple ID agreeing with the message that this may influence your data and documents stored in iCloud associated with this Apple ID.
  3. After you have successfully logged out, the pane will change to a usual login screen.
  4. Type in the data for the new registration and log into your new account with the new name/nickname.
  5. While setting up your new account, iCloud will ask you to provide your new email address.


How to Check Your iCloud mailbox

After you are done with setting up, you can check your mailbox. Launch your browser and visit icloud.com.

  1. Enter your ID and password to log in.
  2. Click on the email icon.
  3. Check your inbox!

Alternatively, you can check your email using the Apple Mail application, if that’s convenient for you.


How to Check iCloud Inbox via Apple Mail

This application is default on all Macs running on OS X 10.0 or newer. This is a very simple app, its interface is user-friendly and intuitive. Here’s how to set it:

  1. Launch ‘System Preferences’, navigate to ‘Internet Accounts’.
  2. On the left of this pane, find your mailboxes and other web accounts you’re using on this Mac machine.
  3. Click on the button with a plus on it and select ‘iCloud’ from the list of accounts on the right.
  4. Enter your ID and password.
  5. Done! Your iCloud email is added to the list of your web accounts.
